Hello, none of us are intending to insult you or anything and I personally apologize if it appears that way. I too have had pups born, had to take pups in difficult labors, and dealt with births of other animals as well. However, when you are talking about breeding chi's, you are talking about a vastly different ballgame than breeding other animals or even other breeds of dogs. Chi's are susceptible to certain medical conditions (ex: low sugar) , chi pups have special needs ( easy with the "soft spot!) , and the fact that they are so small to begin (what happens when pup is as big as mom????) which presents a whole new set of difficulties.I am sure any of us are willing to answer any questions you may have. Just please ask, research, and think before you choose this rout, because it truly is different. Be willing to accept advice from experienced chi breeders, with out feeling offended that we are "talking down to you" because that is not our intentions. :-)Marshak well what if i was to get a 5 lb female to breed> and a 3 lb male>then it should even out? shouldn't it>i don't want to breed to get 2 lb chi's> but i also don't want to breed to get 8 lb chi's>>and the most common weight i have been associated with in my area> is to keep a desirable weight in between 3 and 5 lbs.but i thank u 4 your in-put>i have alot of experience with newborn babies> and taking care of them>>i went through alot of trauma with pets and having babies> and c-sections> stillborns>bottle feeding>giving meds> etc>so any advice on breeding, that has been succesful 4 u > i would like to know what has worked 4 u>i've done lots of deliveries of pets giving birth>but i nvr put the actual pets together to breed on purpose>and that is mainly all i need help on>as soon as i get my chi and she is old enough to breed>which> i know she has to b of at least 2 yrs of age b4 her 1st litter>so it's ok>nobody needs to give me that advice>Thank you all againKimberly

If you are looking to breed a female under the weight of 4lbs you may want to do your homework alittle more. I breed but would never breed one under 4lbs.Jen-CAMy thoughts exactly. I too am a chi breeder and would be scared to death to breed one that small. If you are realy trying for the small gene (which is kinda silly since chi's, like humans, will come in all sizes) the father should be the smal one, not the mother. I have bred my 4.5 lb chi one time with a 3.5 lb father, but that was stupid on my part. Thankfully, everyone was fine and dandy, but one pup was rather large and vet said if he got any bigger a c-section would be required. Thankfully he didn't get bigger. My advice, don't do it. Make sure the mom is big enough to have a healthy pregancy and keep the dad smaller.Marsha
