I know the feeling of being afraid to get attached. I've found it's impossible not to though.
A dogs lifespan is much shorter than ours. We have to understand that by getting another dog, we will most likely have to go through putting them down when the time comes. All the years of happiness they bring is well worth it and I'm glad we have the option of putting them to sleep when they are suffering. (I"m sure they are too).
