Using both a paper method and outside method can confuse her if you are not
careful. If you are determined you will train her to go outside and you
absolutely can not take her out at times, then be careful to keep the papers in
only one place. It is possible to train them to go both on paper and outside,
but it takes a lot of patience and being very careful or she will not be sure if
she is suppose to go inside or out. Make it very clear that only the one spot is
permitted inside. Personally I would recommend staying with only one method if
possible. I have a huge covered concrete porch that the dogs can not get off of,
so for me it is pretty easy to take the grown chis and any pups out at the same
time and leave them as long as needed. The pups learn easily when they do what
the big dogs do. :-)

Puppie
Marsha,
Thank you so much for
the tips. I can use as many of those as possible. I know that I love her
and I want to take the best care of her as I possibly can. I do have another
question. Today it has been raining and the temperature is dropping. So I
haven't been able to take her out much. So I put some newspaper on the floor
so that she could go on there. Is that bad since I am trying to train
her? I do not yet have a sweater for her to wear. I haven't been able to
find on small enough to fit. I didn't want her to get wet and cold and then
wind up sick.
Thanks, Kim

catching her in the act of pottying in the house...since you obviously can't
get to her before she does the deed, try the pennies in a can method or the
squirt bottle. Whenever she squats, shake the can or squirt the water at her
and immediately take her to the appropriate place to go potty. It will take
patience, and there will be accidents. Best not to have her running around to
much just yet. Keep her crated whenever you can't supervise. They will not
mess in their crate (if it is smaller enough and if you take her out enough).
The crate, if used appropriately, will eventually become her favorite place!
The crate should also be used any time you are not home. Chis love small
enclosed placed where they feel they can hide. I personally use a small
carrier. Now that my chis are older and housebroken, I do not shut the door on
it, but that is where you will find them most of the time. Until they are
housebroken, a crate or carrier is one of the most necessary puppy supplies
you can have for a chi.

She is so tiny and I want to use the clicker training method to train her. How
do I start training her to potty outside. She squats so fast that I have no
time to catch her before she has gone pee. I don't want to spank her but I am
not sure what to do to make her understand that it is bad to pee in the house.
I realize that Ihave just gotten her but what can I do to help her not cry
when I have to go back to work tomorrow. I put her down and she cries. The
only time she does not cry is when I hold her and as much as I want to just
hold her all the time I want her to learn that she cannot always be carried.
That she needs to get down and play and such. If there is anyone who can give
me some advice that would be wonderful.
