I understand.  We have 3 rescue-foster-adopted by us Chihuahuas.  I think the crate is a good place to start. After that, you might want to put a "child-gate" in your bedroom so the pooch can't get into the living room.
 
Next, just be thankful you don't have a Great Dane!  At least, as my wife and I say, we have "pluckable" poops.
