My partner doesn't let hi bite, and Tico can go from one of us in play to the other, remembering our choices! What a dog!   Yeah, I agree, because they are so smart, you do have to set who is where the pack, which I have learned is how dogs operate, descendants of wolves, pack animals they are, with a hierarchy.   Alas, I'm not the alpha, according to our little dog, my partner is!
