Didn't someone also mention to check for thyroid
problems? Years ago my blue-merle collie had trouble
until the vet did bloodwork and found she needed
thyroid medication - hers was the type where she
didn't produce enough - can't recall but I think that
type is hypo-thyroid, right? She gained weight easily
and was a bit lethargic as well. The medication, once
adjusted, was just great. (the other type of thyroid
problem produced different symptoms - the dog produces
too much and is generally relatively thin to boot - I
think that one is hyper-thyroid.) Good idea for the
vet to check that.

Also - as I noted in my "is this a stupid idea"
message .... see if you vet would approve the use of a
cleanser called Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser. It is
made for humans who have extraordinarily sensitive
skin - so get his approval. While it is pH neutral -
you'll need to make sure that a neutral ph is
appropriate for dog's skin. (neutral is neutral - but
maybe dogs need naturally more acidic or alkaline
cleansers) You can read about it here and see all
ingredients. They sell it almost everywhere, like
Target, Drugstore.com, Walmart, Walgreens, etc.

See product here:

Side note: Be careful of a similar product made by
Eucerin. Although Eucerin is nice - it does contain
Lanolin extracts which can be an allergy trigger to
those who are sensitive to Lanolin. I wouldn't chance
lanolin on a dog that you're just diagnosing.

CDA is genetic, the hair loss is only to the blue
hair, other hair onthe dog is normal.
Mange affects any and all parts of the dog. I suggest
a trip to theVet, he can check
the hair under a miscroscope.

I have been following this subject on the list and
waswondering if color dilution alopecia is caused by
Sarcoptic Mange or ifthe Color Dilution Alopecia is
something completely different because Ihave been
treating a blue merle with sarcoptic mange since July,
2005.
