Some times these accidents can happen before you have a chance to react. Years ago, my uncle had a big dog that attacked one of my chis and my cockapoo several times. He would come into our yard, on our porch (would get through all types of barriers) and grab my babies and run. I have had to go through surgeries, drain tubes, stitches, ect. I'm so tired of this crap, this is about the 3rd time this has happened, but this is the first time she got hurt seriously. she has been attacted by german shepherds 2 times and now by a sled dog.
