I know how you feel Marsha, I'm afraid that I would feel the same way. The county that I live in doesn't have a shelter either, but, in Rochester, Minnesota they have a shelter that is run by Volunteers and financed by private donations. Maybe something like that could be started where you live. If there is a group of people that feel the same way you do, well maybe something can be done.
Good Luck Sweetie,
Hugs, Marilyn in Minnesota

Subject: [Chihuahuas] oppinion/advice wanted on strays--off chi topic
May I get some opinions/advice from you guys on strays? I know we are all dog lovers here, so although I am not referring to chis, I am hoping some may take the time to reply.
Where I live, we do not have any shelters or animal control officials and the shelters in other counties require proof that you reside in their county before they will accept a dog from you.(I wouldn't take a dog to a shelter unless it is no kill anyhow, but that is beside the point...the option is not available)
My mom and I have a lot of pets and we have sorta become a "drop off point" for strays or unwanted dogs. People are all the time setting dogs off on us. I wish I could keep everyone of them!!!! but of course, I can't. When a stray is hungry, they will do whatever they have to to survive. And who can blame them! These strays will tear the trash out looking for food, they will steal the food from our own dogs, ect. Now I hold no hard feelings toward these dogs because they are hungry. But others (neighbors) are not so understanding and around these parts people will kill a dog for this stuff (despite it being illegal) I can't stand to watch an innocent dog being abused! So normally, I end up catching the dog and taking it and setting it off at another "dog lover's" house. Yes, I know this is wrong!! My question is....does anyone have any better suggestions?
This week, a poor red bone was set off. Everyone tried to shoo it away, but it wouldn't go. It got into our dog food and ate the whole container! It took the food from all of our outside dogs. It got into the trash. Bottom line, it was starving to death and trying to survive. I managed to catch it once, and took it up the road and set it out. It was back to my place before I was! I caught it a second time, and this time took it further. It tried to follow my truck. It trusted me and yes, it even loved me because I was the only one to show it niceness. My heart broke as I got out of sight and could still see it's sad face trying to catch up.
I can't do that again!! Anyone have any suggestions??? Our state law requires every county to have a shelter and an animal control official, but we don't. Local police say they can't do anything. If the dogs stay around, someone WILL kill them. HELP!
Marsha
