I experienced this one time. I took a litter of pups in for their first shots. I live maybe 20 mins from the vet. They got their shots and we headed home. By the time I got home, one of the pups was just as you described, swollen, labored breathing, ect. I told my mom to call the vet and tell them we were on our way back and not to leave. I turned around and was back there in 10 minutes! Vet gave an antihistamine shot and we waited. Pups recovered fine and vet advised that from now on, before all shots, he needs a dose of benedryle.
I love our vet, and I know it wasn't his fault. Sometimes these things happen....we don't know when one of our pups will be that one in a thousand that has an allergic reaction. I still had him at his second set of shots and the vet took extra care and made us wait for a half hour after the shots before letting us go home, to be safe. When I sold him, I was extra picky, making sure he went to a home that would take the extra care to prevent his allergic reactions. You really can't blame the vet if they exercise normal care because they don't know that a pup will have an allergic reaction. Luckily though, our vet will come in at all hours of the night, weekend and holidays if an emergency arises.
