Actually, long coat chis are not as much trouble as you may think. It is no where near as difficult to take care of the coat of a chi as it is to take care of the coat of most long haired breeds.

If you plan to be away from your chi very much, a playmate is extremely helpful. However, I would not recommend getting two at once. It may be overwhelming. Maybe if you get littermates, this would work ok. Otherwise, if you want two, get one and get use to it, ect before getting another. Chis do love each other and get along well with other chis so long as their are no dominance issues....which can be avoided both by establishing your own dominance and by introducing them young enough so at least one is not yet interested in dominance. That is why it is easier to intro a puppy to an adult than to intro two adults. A puppy does not yet care about dominance and will gladly allow the alpha to take charge.

Hi and welcome. First, sorry to hear of your recent problems. :-(

So, should you get a chi???? Wrong group to ask for an unbiased answer!! lol We think the world revolves around the little chis!! Of course everyone should be so privileged as to be owned by a chi!!!

Of course, the reality is, is a chi right for you? You are taking the right steps toward finding out. They are very energetic little dogs. Big dogs in little bodies actually. They are usually a "one person" dog and they love to be held and love to squeeze into small "den" like places. They do not require a lot of room, but they require a LOT of love. Most of them are barkers. They like to express themselves verbally.

Chihuahuas are NOT just "little" dogs. There are a lot of issues unique to a chi. Medical wise, they are prone to several problems as a breed. Heart and hip/leg problems as well as low sugar are a few main medical concerns.

When searching for the right chi, you may come across a lot of breeders who want to break your purse with claims of a teacup, a toy, a miniature, ect. Avoid these terms. A chi is a chi is a chi. That big 8 pounder is no less chi than that little 3 pounder. AND the smaller the chi, the more likely the health problems.

This is just a very general over view, since I don't know how far along you are in your considerations. If you have specific issues you would like for us to address, just ask, there are many people here who will be more than happy to help you along as you make the decision of whether a chi is the right breed for you.

Subject: [Chihuahuas] I am new here INTRO

Greetings from Oklahoma.
I woud liek to tell you al somethign about m y self and why I am
considering getting a Chihuahua.

the best dog i ever had lived to be about 22 years old. I got her
out of my paper she was a found lost dog and when i went ot see her
i fell in love. I took er to m y vet and he said she was half chi
and half rat terrier.

Without a doubt she was the smartest dog i ever saw. I kept a
journal on her and she understood 500 words and commands clearly.
Well she became more than my pet she was my everything. I had and
have high blood pressure and we had tgried drug afterdrug to keep me
alive and nothign had worked. a week after i got her Pocita Lobo was
her name both the top and bottom numbers dropped by 10 points or
more and put me in a a high middle rangeon the top number and made
my bottom number drop enough i was not in danger of a stroke.

For 11 years this dog kept me from ever seeinga danger area again
and kept me happy and smiling.

When her last year came to pass and i knew she did not have much
more time I asled my vet what makes her so special? He told me the
Rat terrier so when she passed away in my arms at the vet i started
looking for a Rat Terrier. I ended up with 2 of them and a shih tzu
to hold. Rat Terries are wonderful dogs for the country where they
can hunt they are not the thing that mademy angel pocita specil.

Last week a horrible thinghappened. The rat teries woudl not stay in
the yard no matter what i dod or tried ot stop them. the were hyper
and loud and the pound man was called here many time when i p tthem
inthe bac k yard and got out yet again.  Yes i do have a fence they
woud just find a way ot dog out.

Finally ht pound man lost paticne adn told me from now on every time
they got out it was a 600 buck fine. I do love them so i cryed adn
sobbed i am not rich and this was like a leaky bucket. Had it been
somethig fixable i woud have done it but we even pout a hot wire on
te bottom and they woud tunnel out fomr a safe area in the yard.

Instead of being good for me they were making my life a living hell
yet i loved them. I agreed wiht him ti place them with my vet adn
help him find them a good farm ot live on.

My fiance is encouraging me to find a
Chihuahua perhaps even apair of them but after what i have been
hrough i have ot be very sure this is hte right thing to do. O i
forgot to tell you on te way ot the rescue oneof them bit me hard n
put 3 pounture wounds in my wrist.

I also need to knwo if Flint River Dog Food is good for a Chihuahua.
Thatis what i had my shih tzu and the ratties on and i have alot of
it here.

Canyou all please tell me if i am barking up the right tree on this?

I do need an angel that can og anywhere with me and bemy constant
companion and wont try ot spend its life trying to get away.

I am 48 yhears old and have a 18 year old son still at home who si
very very good wiht animals i am thinking he may be a vet he
certainly has a way with dogs!!

i have a house wit a nice siuzed fenced in yard lots of toys and a
vet thatis very very good.

What illnesses are common anythign to look out for?

Thanks

Bonnie
