I meant to add that the AKC is doing some DNA testing to make sure the parents are as claimed.

The AKC maintains a "Stud book" that keeps a record of the parents etc. of all dogs 150 breeds registered. The AKC was started 1884. The Chihuahua was first recognized in 1904.  We had a dog register in England with the Kennel Club and could not transfer his registration to the AKC because he didn't have a good 3 generation pedigree.

Here is a link for the AKC history http://www.akc.org/about/history.cfm and the Chihuahua history http://www.akc.org/breeds/chihuahua/history.cfm.

It is my understanding that the UKC and the AKC as well as the Canadian Kennely club, are all equally legit...they are the official registry for their respective countries.
