Well I can tell you what we did when we introduced my moms small terrier to my chow.  Kodi was the only dog for many years, when mom got Harley and I was living with them then.  We took Harley out to met Kodi and I didn't carry or hold or pet Harley to let Kodi know that he was mine and Harley was mom's.  Kodi is gone now and when I got Little Man my brothers chi I was lucky and he already knew my puppy snuggles (collie greman shepard mix).  I hope this helps you a little

I can't answer you as we have no dogs that are outside dogs!  All of our dogs live in the house with us, 5 chi's and 2 pugs and mostly get along just fine.  We have little tiffs now and then, but that is usually Sabrina trying to "mother" all the other pups.  But other than that, they all get along just fine.
 
I do know that you need to give both alot of attention when they are together, especially your spaniel being he was there first.  But they will probably get along well, there is always an adjustment period when you add a new furbaby to the "pack".
 
It is good you are doing alot of research before getting a chihuahua, as they are very special little furbabies.  Good luck and let us know how it goes for you, and send pics when you get your little one.
