Hi EIEIO,

When the vet did the xray did he say what grade it was?  Luxating Patella has four grades.  The 1/4 tablet glucomine chondroitin, msm would be fine to give her.  If the 1/4 pill is too big just cut it in half and give half then the other half.  I put mine in mashed potatoes and sometimes mine will work out the pill so I gave to get creative to get her to take it.  The glucomine may take one to two weeks before you notice that she is improving.  Sometimes it may take longer.  Was she limping or in pain that she was diagonosed with Luxating Patella?  I was just curious.  You are very lucky you have a vet that doesn't want to rush her off to surgery and is conservative.  Most around my area want to do the surgery even if it is questionable if it is necessary.  The surgery causes arthritis or it may have to be re-done.

I agree I wouldn't want to give asprin forever but if she had some sort of inflamation or pain then I would for the short term.  If you have any other question I will be happy to answer them if I know the answer.  Let me know how she is doing.

Emi

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Emi - Luxating Patella

This is my third attempt to post this, I am a newbie. We have a
long-haired Chi/Pap/? that we call Whatever because we are not to
sure whatever she is. She was rescued at two months old, she
weighed 1.6, had a skin infection, bald, starving, had seizures and
even threw up a feeding tube where somebody tried to force feed
her. With our wonderful country vet's help and around the clock
feeding for a month she did survive. Whatever is now one and a half
years old and weighs 4.5 lbs. Last month she got sick and we found
out she had retained molars and canines which were infected so we
put her on antibiotics and when the infection cleared up our vet
recommended another vet to do the surgery. At that time we had her
spayed.

Two weeks later she just wasn't herself back to the new vet, his
examine and x-rays showed a luxating patella at the left rear knee.
He does not want to operate right now and recommended that she loose
weight. He said her bones are very tiny and she should be about 3
lbs. Also he said to give her 1/4 of baby aspirin for pain. Well
we have put her on a lean diet and DH has been told in no uncertain
terms NO goodies. He was not a dog person until Whatever came along
and he has spoiled her rotten. Whatever is his shadow. We do give
her a little graham cracker with peanut butter at night for her low
sugar which really helps to prevent the seizures. I have gotten off
the subject, sorry.

I have read and read about luxating patella and today I found this
site and what you are giving your chi. Do you think that it would
be safe to give one fourth (1/4) tablet of glucomine 500
mg/chondroitin 400mg/MSM 166 mg to Whatever. I would rather help
with the problem by using that than just using the baby aspirin to
mask the problem

Any help you and anybody else can give me would be greatly
appreciated.

Side note, we would ask the vet but we retired to the boonies,
closest town has a pop of 356. Our wonderful vets here are more
familiar with BIG critters. They also are very conservative as far
as treatment goes.

If my other l-o-n-g message shows up I apologize for the repeat.

Thank you...
