I agree fixing a dog decresses their health problems. That is why I had my male shepard fixed. However I know why they requrie show dogs to be intact. For females the surgury causes a scar, and that is a big point against your dog. The scar could be used to hide other things that would make the dog non-showable. For ex: a herneia(sp) which would be a big defect that can be inherited. For males a undecended(sp) testical is a the same as a herneia(sp). If the dogs were not required to be intact for showing then a unscrouplus shower/breeder could hide this inherited defects by saying, and or having thier dogs fixed.

The argument makes sense as to why one should strive to breed only show quality, but still doesn't make sense to me as to why show quality must be bred. I mean, say I want to get into showing, but have no desire to breed. I go out and find a perfect show quality dog from a great breeder...lots of champion backgrounds, ect...and want to devote my time and money to making this dog a top champion, and have absolutely no desire to ever breed him or her. Seems to me that it would be to my benefit to spay the females.....no missing shows due to being in heat! and neutered the males.....no more worrying that he may be distracted by the cute chick next door (lol) and not to mention the different cancers and other health issues I no longer have to worry about.....I just don't see the benefit of requiring show dogs to be intact.  I am not arguing with you, because as I said, I don't show and am not familiar with the rules and regs and reasoning, I am just saying it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. AND, I am a breeder, so naturally I am not just advocating spay/neuter for the sake of advocating....I just feel that unless a dog is part of a well planned breeding program, they should be fixed for their own benefit. If they aint gonna use it, why not let 'em loose it??? lol.

The goal of showing dogs is to improve the breed, period.
Other than artifical insemination, breeding two un-neutered dogs is
the only way to do this.
Yes, some people show to boost their own ego and name,
but that is their personal agenda. A showdog must
meet the breed standard of perfection, temperament etc.
A true breeder only breeds his/her dogs to better the
breed as well, not to provide puppies to consumers, but
clearly they will have some to sell to very selected buyers.
If you buy from a breeder of show dogs (even if it is
a "pet quality" dog) you will find that
you have to pass very much the same requirements that
a good rescue group requires, including required
neutering if the dog is not show quality. These are
not "backyard breeders" who will sell to anyone who
arrives on their doorstep, or who breed because the
dog needs to "experience motherhood".

showing dogs. I do not show, but I know a lot of people who do. I
don't understand why they would have the requirements that a show
dog not be spayed/neutered. I mean if you do not plan to breed, then
there are many health benefits to the dog to get it fixed....why
cheat the best of them out of those health benefits??? Just don't
make much sense to me, lol

but I didn't see that anyone suggested the most important thing. If
the dog was kept as a show prospect, that means he was most likely
intact. If you haven't had him neutered, you should do so
immediately. Any intact male dog is more prone to have dominance
issues.
