I am going to put my two cents in on this one LOL My opinion, there are dogs we have too many of. Simple fact no one can dispute. Cats we have too many of them simple fact no one can dispute.
I am just talking about my experiences here, when I went all over the state of NJ and New York looking for a dog I went to a lot of shelters. As many as 30. I am not kidding, we went all over. I did not find one little Chihuahua, yorkie, Maltese in any. I saw a lot of Chihuahua mixes, I saw one pure bred Chihuahua that was blind ( made me so mad how dare someone dump this poor baby because she was blind I could not take her though because she bit and the shelter work said so and when she felt someone near her she just started to snap. She was going to be euthanized, :(  ) , I am sure there are pure bred Chihuahuas out there in rescue and shelters but I think very few healthy pure bred chis are put down.
The shelters are full of pit bull and pit bull mixes. Also a lot of shepard mixes.
I feel that if someone has their heart set on a Chihuahua the reputable breeders that raise their babies with love and care for the moms should be there.
You can make the argument of if you buy ,a dog in the shelter will die. Well in my case and I am sure I am not the only one, they would die anyway because a pit bull mix or a big dog is just not right for us and my heart was set on a chi or another small breed. I also did not want to bring a special needs dog into the house. I just did not want that. Some of the small dog rescues want as much money in adoption fees as it costs to buy a puppy and are just ridiculous screening people at times. I had ones asking me for banking statements to prove my income. One wanted me to consent to a criminal background check. I can see vet references , one home visit, and personal; references. But no way is anyone getting my banking info or invading my privacy like that. Also one wanted me to sign a paper saying she has a right to show up unannounced and check on the dog whenever she wanted and that she can at any time take it back if she at her sole discretion did not like something in my home.
Let me get off my soapbox now and continue my day. LOL I have so much cleaning to do. My sweet little Bambi tore up a phone book and put it all over my house. UGGGH

Hello everyone,
I haven't been a member of this group very long. I have a long haired
male chi, and am hoping to get a female soon as a pal for my boy. I
think we are placing the blame on breeders, instead of looking at the
whole picture. It is the pet owner who dumps the dog at the shelter
not the breeder. I think most breeders try to do right by ASKING
QUESTIONS, JOINING GROUPS, SEEKING KNOWLEDGE. That and anyone who has
bred dogs knows that you don't make any money from it, by the time you
figure up all the food costs, toys, chewies, vet visits, time,
heartbreak, and effort, you are far from turning a "buck". I don't
personally breed dogs, but I know good people who do, and I know they
love their dogs as much as I or you do. Dogs from breeders sometimes
end up in shelters, it is a sad fact, but that isn't the breeders
fault it is the pet owner who droped the dog off there. Before you
assume that someone isn't trying to do the right thing, get the facts.
Nobody deserves to be told they are stupid or bad for trying to do
something.
