First, thanks to everyone who responded. Pepper is doing better today. I kept a close eye on his temperature and the swelling/redness all night. Had his temperature gotten high, or the swelling/redness increased, we would have gone to a vet somewhere. It is hard in a rural area to find someone who will bother to come in.

However, the swelling and redness both were rescinding after he popped the boil. His temperature never did go up. It stayed at 101.5 ......perfectly normal. He did not show any signs of pain. His attitude was completely normal. All of these was the reason I decided to watch and wait. One lesson I have learned over the years is that you can automatically run to the vet for everything....sometimes you gotta wait a while and see if it is actually necessary. Thankfully, in this case, it wasn't.

There is still some swelling and a little pinkness, but nothing like it was. The boil has not returned, but continues to drain a little bit. He will keep his appointment with the vet as already planned. I will be honest...now that the boil has gone down and I can actually observe the area some, I am fearing cancer or a tumor of some kind. Hopefully the vet will be able to give me some good news.

Thanks again to all who responded and I will keep everyone updated and will be keeping a close eye on Pepper......

Marsha
