Teacup is just a small chi. Most do NOT have problems if the breeder
breeds selectively. Teacups are not necessarily the "runt" of the litter
either. If it is the "runt" and all the other puppies are much bigger,
then it may have health problems. Some breed down their sizes by using 2.5
to 3 lb robust and healthy studs and 3.4 to 4 lb robust and healthy
bitches. Not only the breeding dogs but their lines must be small
too. With this breeding, you would get most "Teacup" sized puppies and all
healthy. It is an art.
Now, on another note, most folks should NOT have a teacup because they are
fragile until older. Folks that have high vet bills can have them for
various reasons. "I sat, stepped or whatever on the puppy."
They don't follow feeding instructions and their puppy gets hypoglycemia.
Then, there are the true cases where something is wrong with the pup and is not
the fault of the buyer. If teacup puppies are robust and playful it is a
good indicator of health. If a teacup pup is lethargic, well, that's a
clue. Buyer really has to beware. Breeders really need to know what
they are doing too.
