What is the average amount of food they should eat in a day??
My one problem is that if I don't leave food out for the cat be
becomes distructive and starts to chew carboard........Olaf is
definately THIN........but he had routinely 4 large stools everyday
and if possible I think the training would be sooooooooo much easier
if that number were lower..........

Is there a place you can put the cat's food where others can't get to it - such as on TOP of a counter?

I have heard that if pets eat a better quality food, they may eat less and/or they may poo less. I don't know if they were referring to less poo at a time or less times per day. It could also affect the smell of it and the firmness of it - which doesn't sound to be your concern, though.

Also, whatever I read, I never take it to mean that it works that way on EVERY single pet (although it might).

On the food package, there should be a range of how many cups (example 3/4 cup to 1 1/4 cup per day). However, some people have to adjust this amount to keep their pet's weight at a healthy level, especially factoring in their activity level. If your pet's weight is at an appropriate level, what I would think to do is continue to free feed for a few days. However, measure how much food you put out. Then measure after 24 hours. Start again. In a few days, you will see if he eats approximately the same amount of food every day. Then you can just half that amount and put it out in the morning and then again in the evening.

Also, you didn't mention how much he weighs, so...

And how many times a day should they be feed??

"THEY" (articles I've seen on the net by vets and others) say once or twice. On the lists I'm on, the vast majority by far feed twice per day. (Unless he's a baby - they need to eat more times per day.)

How long do you roughly wait before expecting to put them in there potty spot?

I've read/heard about 15 - 25 minutes after eating. Each one might be somewhat different. You might be able to figure out yours if you observe him for a few times after feeding him at a set time.
