Reminds me of college biology with the pea plants. Some recessive genes do
not show every generation. So a puppy may show a trait that was masked in the
parents by the dominant gene. The dominant genes would no allow the recessive
gene to show physically (phenotype) even though it is in the genetic makeup
(genotype). It is very interesting to see what pops, especially in Chis
because they have SO many different varieties of color and patterns! - em J

no, not necessarily. I would have to go back to look at all the previous
threads here, but I think the original of this post was one by Cindy Andrilli
who was posting on her litter of 8 pups. She has listed two as pet only. This
is because those two have "kinks" in their tails. Nothing at all wrong with
them, but would certainly be a point looser in the show ring. Out of 9 pups,
only 2 had this flaw. And, to my knowledge, neither parent had the flaw.

Another example.....my Ginger has a tail that is too short. Not a bobtail or
anything like that, but just too short for the show ring. Of all the pups she
has ever had, this litter produced one that also had a shorter tail. The first
time she has ever passed this trait.

Genetics can creep up on you at anytime. Both good and bad traits can be
passed. Much like in humans, that cute blue eyed blond haired child is not
gonna necessarily produce other blond haired blue eyed children, no matter how
much the trait is desired. Likewise, take me for instance, I have Alports
Syndrome which is an hereditary disorder that causes, among other things, nerve
deafness. I am the ONLY one in my family with a hearing loss. Since I have no
biological children, I do not know if I would pass a hearing loss on, but there
is a good chance it wouldn't pass. There is also a good chance that it could
lay dormant and pass on to a future generation.

Thank you. That had me so curious. Another question if one or two pups
from the whole batch had a genetic flaw wouldn't they all carry it? Not saying
that is why these pups are pet quality just asking in general

Pet quality means that they are not show quality. For some breeders, not
being show quality also means not breeding quality. It doesn't mean there is
necessarily anything wrong with the pup, it just means that there is a flaw,
however slight, that would prevent the dog from winning shows or would
disqualify the dog from showing, or else that it has some genetic flaw that
could be passed on to pups and thus should not be bred. They still make great
pets, but ethical breeders just want to be honest and let potential buyers know
that the dog should not be bred or is unlike to win any shows....
