They are also liable to get a horrible dog.  IMO that is just too risky

We bought our dog from my hubby's cousin. She was telling us that next time
around they were going to try breeding mom and son. I asked about that b/c
with humans that's just not allowed. She said you can do that as long as it
wasn't brother and sister. I know they were only doing mother/son to see if
they could get a lighter brown puppy that way.

Depends on the genetics.  I, personally, do NOT line breed; though it is
common.  You may get double the good genes but, also, you may enhance any
faults you have as well.
