IMO the heartworm prevention's good far outweighs the risk of the maybe side
affects. If you ever have a dog that gets heartworms you will understand.
It is not pretty and it is an long and expensive treatment to get rid of
them, all the while not knowing if the dog will die. All it takes is one
mosquito and here in the south even out winters are warm enough for fleas
and mosquitoes. I use the frontline plus on my chi as well as the other
animals.

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Heart Worm Prevention

Hi Everyone,
We have a 5 lb 4.5 month old long hair chihuahua puppy named Teddy.
He is the love of our life. Yesterday I took him to the vet for the
first time. He got his rabies shot as he had had the other vaccines
with the breeder.

The vet also said to start him on heart worm prevention. I bought the
one year's suppy of Interceptor but after reading information on the
internet I am afraid to give it to him. The possible side effects
sound scary. We spend half the year in Florida and the other half in
Washington State.

What do you all do for heartworm prevention? Also what about flea
prevention? My puppy does not have fleas but we walk him outdoors so
he may get them at some point.

Thanks,
Jean
