Hey, Noelle.
If you look in the Files section of the group's home page, you'll find a
file called Housebreaking.txt that I put there. This is the system that
worked effortlessly for me. I have never crated my girls and would never do
so for more than a couple of hours. If you have a puppy, they can't hold
their waste for much longer than that, and will have no choice but to
eliminate inside their crate, which certainly isn't teaching them to go
where you want them to.
I did use a baby gate to block off a linoleum-floored bathroom which served
as a "crate", if you like, for my girls when I couldn't be supervising them.
That way, they could have their sleep/food/water areas separate from the pee
pads. I literally carpeted the floor of the small bathroom with pee pads
except for their bed and a small area for their food/water. Gradually I
used fewer pee pads, and fewer, until it was just one. But the most
important part of the system is to use ONLY positive reinforcement, to
praise and reward so that they *want* to use that pee pad (newspaper,
whatever) and know that they can infallibly earn your approval.
Hope that helps.
Anne
