I am not worried about the pups (4 of them) they are doing great! It is mom I
am worried about. They are hurting her and she is not doing anything to
discourage them...which in and of itself is unusual for this particular momma.
The pups are getting more than enough, they are not really letting her get
enough.

When had setters I would allow them to nurse until 5 weeks. Mom normally got
aggressive after this and would try to get away. I took her cue and let her be
separated from the pups. The pups would suck the life out of her and she would
get thin. But she had nine puppies, I don't know how many you have and if it
makes a difference. Her puppies were fat, so I figured they were healthy
enough to wean. Do chis nurse longer than bigger dogs?? I would see how they
feed and if they keep their weight up, they should be fine. I JMO - em J

I was wandering how long most of your mom's allow pups to continue nursing?
Ginger's pups will be 7 weeks old Monday, they are eating hard food and lots of
it. They are literally little pigs and I have a hard time keeping enough food
available for Ginger...and I free feed!! They have been eating for weeks now,
but still, she is allowing them to nurse.

This is not like her, she actually has a rather agressive personality
(although she has mellowed alot since Honey passed). In the past, she has never
allowed nursing past the 5 week max. They are doing a number on her, her
nipples are red and scratched to pieces...not in good shape, because they are
so rough at this age. Still she makes no attempt to stop them. I feel they are
way to old for this. This isn't the occasional trying to get a drink thing, but
are nursing as much as if they were just being weaned.

How long do most of you all find pups continuing to nurse.?
