When in Vet Tech school our professor taught us that dogs think a lot like wolves. She said it's nice for them to live in clans instead of being humanized so I took few bahavior classes (electives am not a behaviorist) and found out that they really enjoy it. I studied wolves for a while and their behavior (during the class)and now practice this with them.
Have you seen the Dog Whisperer? Is kind of like he says. . . if they don't know their place in the pack they will be miserable. Hope I explained myself well.....I don't know how to put it into words (maybe the language barrier) but the main thing is, they are part of my clan not vice versa. I'm ALpha and hubby too (sometimes :-D) the kids are what is considered older pups so they have authority and Morroka is the Alpha's beta which is like the best friend of the alpha but with limits...Fiona is a pup and everybody in the pack care for her, even Morroka (toy poodle). . . we do not raise our voice to them but we punish by grabbing their neck gently (that's how alphas punish) they do not look into our eyes but we do, Morroka shows her belly when she knows did something wrong which is a puppy conduct (to show submission) We eat first then she does....we do not feed her our food (health reasons) but this show her that we control that. She has many toys which we give her in the evening and nights, we also control that. But she gets to sleeps with us in bed because that's what wolfs do (they touch each other when sleeping) of course when the alphas are "mating" she retires herself to the "pups" bed. She goes with us everywhere but if we must leave her we give her food so she thinks we were hunting. We also use to applaud loud when she does something wrong, because we cannot grawl LOL She is trainned and socialized, walks on a leash but we do not allow everyone to touch her unless she wants to. Is stuff like that, I'm sure most of you do some of these things some are just things I learned from the professor I mentioned above.
