Noelle,

We spent a week off when we got Brutus. #1 was easily done with the praise.
#2 was more of an effort of just staying on top of the situation. We use the
pad and outside. Some say it confuses the dog but I don't think he has a
problem with it. We always say "potty". We put him outside or on the pad
after he comes out of the crate and/or when he wakes up from a nap. With #2,
it sounds a little weird, but we always watched his mannerisms (sniffing and
spinning in circles) and looked at his anus to see if it was puffy (watching is
butt is the weird part). Puffy meaning if he has one on deck. LOL! We then
immediately put him on the pad and tell him "potty". When he did go on the pad
on really close to it, we gave him a treat and praise him. The pad is in the
kitchen and we are able to block off the kitchen. So if he didn't go yet, we
block him in the kitchen and spend time tapping the pad and saying potty. When
he does, praise and treat come!

This started when he was eight weeks old and now at eleven we don't have a
problem. The praising continues and the treats are about every three poops
now, but Brutus is pretty automatic right now. We will continue to reinforce
this behavior with other good behaviors/trick/commands as well. I guess
reinforcing this behavior comes from the years of constant training our late
Miniturature Schnauzer Ziggy. Ziggy was ADD at best and was always a training
and retraining session. LOL!

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Training Issues....

I have a 12 week old chihuahua. I love him dearly and could not be
happier with him. I am having some trouble training him though. I
amusing the wee wee pads and when he pees he will go right over to
them no problem and pees. Going #2 is another story he just goes
wherever he wants. I am usually catching him and putting him on the
pad just in time and prasing him very much, but he is just not
catching on quite yet. Any tips you have would be so great! thanks
Noelle
