The best piece of advice I got from this group was to get a cbc or super-chem bloodwork first. (I needed it anyway as my holistic vet was to make him nutritional suppplements tailored to his biological needs). Unfortunately, he had a high BUN. The doctor (my traditional emergency vet who is close by and the surgeon who I was to let operate) who previously had called me stupid for spending the extra money said "he would not operate at this time" with the high BUN. He had made me feel so over protective for asking for it and needless to say I hated bring right and getting that news. Also there is the issue of the anesthesia method he will use. Has he put your dogs under before? We had already had experience with that when he broke a nail in the nail bed (ouch). But there is a lot written in here on masking etc. Become an expert on that as well. I've been victim of thinking I was inquiring too much of the so-called experts.
