The only conection I have found is that an Australian Shepherd-like
herding dog was thought to have arrived in Australia with Basque
shepherds who had large flocks of sheep. Then they (the dogs,
shepherds and sheep) somehow ended up in America. Their breed was
crossed with others to develope the Australian Shepherd we know today.

Like most breeds, their history is pretty blurry. There are a lot of
breeds with names that don't really make a true connection to their
history. Even the Chihuahua is "improperly named". They did not
actually come from Chihuahua, Mexico and were really developed in
America.

It all really doesn't matter, though. We love our dogs no matter what,
right?
