I have fostered a few rescue dogs in my time. I fostered 2 Chihuahuas
and one Italian Greyhound. One of the Chis and the IG had
serious "licking problems"! I think it was from stress but I am
beginning to think that it is a dominance issue, too. It seems that
the "licky dog" I have met have had pretty strong, confidant
personalities and were pretty alpha.
The one Chihuahua would lick feet whenever he got a chance. My brother
always wore flip-flops in the summer. When I was fostering this
particular Chihuahua and my brother came over, he would end up with
really wet feet! When the Chi figured out that my brother was not
happy with all the feet licking, he (the Chi) would run by his feet
real quick and lick and then run away. We dubbed the action "run by
licking", LOL!
I wish I had kept that Chihuahua. His name was Pablo and he was born
deaf. I think he was a product of a merle to merle breeding, which
caused his deafness. He was mostly white with 2 black spots and his
ears were all white. He wasn't merle but I think both his parents
were. He had the funniest personality! While in my care, I taught him
my own version of hand signals. I used a "thumbs up" signal for when
he did good. Then, I gave him a treat. I used a different signal for
sit, down, ect. He learned more than most hearing dogs learn in a very
short time! I was just his foster mom, though, and I had enough dogs
already. He found a wonderful home through the rescue group. I miss
him, though. Mr. Licky Dog.
