The Veterinarian office where I work performs an In-house "Vet Scan"  prior 
to surgery on the same day if your pet is under 2 years of age.  IV  fluids 
during surgery is an extra precaution and is normally recommended for  older 
pets.  If you feel more comfortable having this done, I'm sure your  Vet won't 
mind.
