Hi Sheila,
There are not two boxes. The blue grid thing in the front is only about
an inch high and is an item I wasted my money on so decided to use it in
front of the litter box. It is a Wiz Dog and I use it to help catch
the litter when they come out of the box.

Yes, I have a male and a female using a litter box. I did buy a
storage box that was taller and cut the opening at the end so my male
did not spray over the top of the box. Photo attached.
