Yes, a puppy is only a baby but it's not a human baby. I love my dog to death and I do treat her like a person, but there is a line. Yes, dogs are pack animals but it is unreasonable to think that you have to be next to your dog 24/7. Maybe the pup is scared, i'm sure that's why Daisy whined, but it has to learn that being alone is okay. I don't think you are adding to the problem. Dogs aren't people, they think differently and react differently but please don't get me wrong I agree 100% that they are part of the family. I was crying the other day thinking about how I'd feel if I lost Daisy.
