Charlie I understand what you are saying here but there are other types of
rawhide.  I choose to use the type that is in the shape of a short stick.
It is not one single piece of rawhide but rather more like itty bitty bits
of rawhide molded together to make a stick.  You can easily break it in half
and I have watched mine eat it...little bits at a time.

The "blockage" thing is rather specific to rawhide. If you watch them
work on a big piece, you'll see them chew it until it can become a
very soft, long, white gooey rope of rawhide. This string may be
rather long, perhaps 6 or 8 inches, but even though it is soft and
gooey, it is very very strong, try to tear it and you can't. If they
swallow this long soft and delicious (to them) rope, it can bind in
the intestines and cause very serious, possibly deadly, problems. It
is similar to the problems with swallowing tinsel at Christmas.
