I wasn't trying to say that people were less knowledgeable there. I was simply
stating that this use to be a very common thing to do. When I said we have come
a long way in our knowledge, I mean human kind in general....not any specific
class of people. In fact, some of the older folk around these parts still
"advise" people to do that when the talk of mange comes up. My grandma just
told mom to use it on a dog not too many months ago(she never...she knew
better)... When I was growing up, that was what we automatically did if a dog
got mange.....and an uncle lost a dog by using it on her about 3 years
ago....so the older folk still tend to do it in these parts......But just in
case there is someone on the list reading this who has never heard of it and
thinks it may be a suggestion, I just wanted to point out that it is a bad
idea......

I know it's effects and that's why I adviced her to use Frontline. People in
Puerto Rico knows of this side effects as well so it's not a problem of
knowledge but of the choices they make. I see no difference on knowledge here
in the states than in Puerto Rico That's why the problems with stray animals
are the same.

People use to use motor oil to treat mange all the time. That was before we
realized the dangers. Motor oil is poisonous and should NEVER be used. We have
come a long way in our canine knowledge.
