This is one of the many reasons that two
Chihuahuas are better than one. My baby will
stand at attention if he notices I did not put on
a coat or pick up my handbag, but if I prepare to
go OUT as in really go OUT rather than simply to
the mailbox or trash, he will immediately curl up
with the older girl and they will both go to a
dogbed where they appear to remain until I return.
When I am just making a noticeable short hop
outside, the baby remains literally at attention
about four feet from the front door. I think he
wants to cover all possible methods of my return.
As soon as I walk in both dogs come up to welcome
and receive THEIR welcoming coo's and petting.
About 15 years ago I had an "only child" dog
almost completely destroy my house on my first
trip away from home. He was switched to crate
training. To his dying day when he saw me pick up
my purse he immediately went to his crate and he
would bark if I didn't come back and latch the
door. When the door was latched, he laid down in
a curl and went to sleep, clearly feeling safe
there.
