I got a xpen(?) a plastic pen that has 8 sides, can be octagonal or as I did, a rectangle-got it at Babies R'Us, I'm sure you can get elsewhere too. That way during the day, he has a bed, food, water, pee pad (I use the reusable pad-I have it weighted down b/c Rico used to move it around even when poo is on it), and lots of toys! Rico never barks to come out, and when either myself or my folks are home, we gate off the kitchen area so he has room to run. Also at night, we run up and down the halls and explore the other rooms...I need to keep an eye on him b/c last night I didn't for a minute and he pooed on the carpet.
Long story short-the plastic playpen (around 65 or $80) works great for us!
