At our PetSmart, they taught us to tell the dog "wrong" instead of no. She would just look at me as I stood and told her 'wrong'...'wrong'...'wrong'...etc. Eventually, after a little sigh, she would finally sit or down....she knew...but for Jade, early classes were more about play then responding to commands, even though she knew exactly what I was asking. During her advance class, I would tell her 'down' and tell her 'wrong' one time. After the first time, I would place her in a down position or a sit position and hold her there if need be. (never rough, just made sure she did what she was told to do). Sometimes, she'd get a little growly (but she's always been vocal and is harmless). Practice, practice, practice...it's what makes them consistant. Someone responded on here that most of the work is done at home and she is SO correct. You just can't expect to work with a dog for an hour, once a week and have her be perfect. It didn't take long, that she knew that if I told her 'down' or 'sit', she WAS going to 'down' or 'sit' and she just started doing it...and enjoying it. She's one that loves the "OH! I got it right!" thing...:) By the time she went into rally, she was quite the little competitor. Once you go into rally, you can only give the command one time and you can never touch them. We were allowed to give repeated hand signals but not voice ques. She was awesome. It was almost as though she strived for perfection. I had the instructor tell me, 'mom, she doesn't always have to be perfect'...but it wasn't me that expected perfection...she worked hard for it. You could just see her come alive and animated as I would ask her to go through her paces. Of all the dogs I've trained, I think I've enjoyed her the most because she seemed to just thrive on it.
