So sorry that he's having a hard time.

Firstly, do not give him any kind of aspirin or pain killer - they thin
the blood and you don't need him bleeding.

Question... Was this a regular neuter or was he a crypt? If he was a
crypt then that is, of course, a much more invasive procedure.

Assuming he was a regular neuter... How does it look - is it really
red, swollen, leaking, etc.? If so, that's the first sign of an
infection. I tell clients to compare the wound to a cut on your hand
or something. You know when it's healing it is a bit red and swollen.
That's perfectly normal. But, you know when a cut you have doesn't look
right. Well, it's the same thing - that's what you're looking for.

Do not let him lick it! He can, and will, lick it open. Do not let
him jump up on furniture, run up and down stairs, etc. He can open the
incision with too much movement.

You can put a compress of warm paper towel on it - not wet, just warm.
You want to keep the area clean and dry. You can heat the towel up in
the microwave. The warmth can be soothing.

Usually within 24 -48 hours the initial discomfort goes away. Some
dogs are completely fine the first night - like nothing happened. Some
need a day or two. Perfectly normal.

I know you feel bad, but trust me - you did the right thing. I've been
working with animals in the shelter and clinic and rescue for years. I
see far too many dumped and/or killed on a daily basis. I've had to
euth my share of animals and it's a horrifying thing to do - especially
when you consider that it's completely unnecessary. If more people
stopped having litters, less animals would end up at the shelters and
in rescue. It would also give the animals already there a far better
shot at life. Not to mention the enormous health benefits you have
afforded your dog with a very simple procedure.

>From everyone who has had to clean up other people's messes on a daily
basis for years... Thank you for not adding to the problem.
