I know breeders should try to meet and exceed standard, and I do
try...however my first Chi had a "deer-like head" and I actually as a pet
owner prefer that head with the thin torso kinda like an IG. I miss my
Santana I got her my freshman year in highschool. She was a beautiful fawn
color and quite petite in frame. Very sweet, she liked to dance. anyways I
like that "type".

One of the amazing things about Chihuahuas is how different each of them can
look. You can easily have two full blooded chis that look nothing alike.

The AKC does set forth standards of what is "preferred" in a chi. A well
rounded dome (apple head) a tail that is not too skinny (rat tail) and not
to short. It should curve over the back. The body longer than it's height,
The eyes should be full, but not bulging, it should weight 6 pounds or less,
Any color, ect and so on. Full standards description can be found at
http://www.akc. <http://www.akc.org/breeds/chihuahua/> org/breeds/chihuahua/

A chi that does not meet these standards, just means it wont win any
shows. It doesn't make it any less a chi. The AKC does not mention the terms
Deer head, but does refer to an "apple dome" which is relatively new to the
description, as it use to only say "well rounded", ect. They specify only
two distinctions...short coat or long coat.

So basically, while a certain chi may not meet the show standards, that does
not mean it can not be a full chi. A good breeder should try to breed two
dogs that are most likely to produce a pup most closely resembling the
standards, but there are plenty of full chis out there that simply do not
meet standards for one reason or another.

>From the description you gave of the chi, sounds like it is closer to
standards, with the short legs, cobbly or husky type body, big head
(depending on shape) ect.

Subject: [Chihuahuas] Different breeds of chis

My niece used to have a chi that looked diffently from mine and my
sister's and most of the other chis I have seen. This particular breed
had short stubby legs, a bigger head, and a thicker tail. She swore
she bought the dog from a chi breeder and had the AKC papers that
proved he was a chi. To me he looked like a Corgi. Are there
different types of chis? I know there are appleheads and deer heads.
Does anyone know what particular breed I am talking about? Oh, the
reason why I said she "used" to have is because someone stole her dog
right out of her yard.
