Although Wal-Mart denies the claim, an Action News I-Team investigation reveals new UPC stickers have been glued over old bar codes on recalled pet food packages. And it has customers like Melissa Martin worried. Martin takes in stray cats...right now she's got nine. "They're my family. I love them just like my family." Her youngest is Peety. Even though he's just a kitten, this finicky feline already has a favorite food: Special Kitty's Duck and Wild Rice. But when Peety suddenly started acting sick, she got worried. "He started drinking a lot of water and he quit eating his favorite food the duck," Martin recalls. That's when she decided to investigate and fished the empty pouch from the trash. A closer examination revealed a new bar code had been glued over the old recalled bar code. "I was mad, I was so mad and I calmed down and went to Wal-mart the next day and I pulled the thing off the shelf and I scanned the bar code at Wal-mart and I lifted the other bar code up and scanned it and it said please ask for assistance. It wouldn't even scan." Martin learned she wasn't alone. On an on-line forum for animal lovers called Itchmo.com, Wal-Mart customers from across the country posted similar stories. Action News 36 contacted Wal-Mart's corporate headquarters who issued us the following statement: "All the Special Kitty cat food on sale at Wal-Mart is unrelated to the original cat food recall. Our supplier didn't want to destroy the brand new and unused packaging in its warehouse. So when it came time to restart production, it placed stickers with new UPC's and QU OK on the packaging to show that the product inside was from new, safe batches," says Jamie Arms, Wal-Mart Spokeswoman. Still animal owners like Martin aren't totally convinced. "Before they put it back on the shelf check their stuff and watch more carefully before they do it again. Quit being greedy. They just want the money they don't care about the animals," she contends. Wal-mart tells Action News 36 to make sure there's no confusion, the manufacturer of Special Kitty, Menu Foods, will only ship merchandise that has the new UPC printed on the package. Action News 36 also tried contacting Menu Foods for their side of the story. They said they were prohibited from talking to the press because they are under a gag order.
