Yes, the hard crunchy food is about the size of the regular M&Ms but
square shaped.
The meal that Maxx seems to not finish is either breakfast or
dinner. He usually finishes his lunch. I chose to lessen the amount
but still stick to making 3 meals available to him.

All I can add is that Cesar came home at 11 weeks of age and he was
eating hard crunchy food, although the individual pieces are very
small. At first, I fed him 3 small meals a day but when I noticed
that he seemed to be leaving food at his noon day feeding, a month
or so later, I went to 2 meals a day, morning and evening, which he
is still on at 7 mos of age.
