My Clancey (a rescue at 2 1/2 y.o.) would do that too.  Once he got 
aclimated to our home and eating on a regular basis plus watching and 
correcting him regularly) he stopped also.  I was vigilance about 
picking it up as soon as he would go.  Sooooo glad thats over!!
