First, you did nothing wrong! Sounds like his glands need expressed. You can actually do this your self, but if you are faint of heart and it is so bad that it has ruptured, you probably should go ahead and let the vet do it, lol. Really all it is is where defecation gets built up in the glands. You need to ask your vet to show you how to express them and make this a regular part of your grooming, ect. Usually, there will be little or nothing come out, but right now, there will be a lot for him. You did nothing wrong and it is not anything to be really worried about. Yes, it needs treated and expressed, but don't loose sleep over it tonight :-) Marsha
