Hello Linda You are right to be concerned. However: A regular neutering operation anesthesia is considered normal, and nothing to worry about. They use the anesthetics so the dog will be easier to control when they work. You can well imagine what a twisting and snarling dog would be like to work on. It also protects them from accidental bites, and injuries. What is objected to is the tendency for some vets to anesthetize whenever they need to do any kind of a procedure, tartar scraping from teeth is one for an example, where it should not be necessary. There are other ways as it was pointed out earlier. Chihuahua's are very small dogs, and as such, are fragile. With a fragile dog, common sense dictates that they have more delicate and scaled down systems and cannot tolerate excessive anything. Repeated anesthesia with Chihuahuas is just not sane treatment when you consider their size. Larger dogs tolerate anesthesia better due to their size and stronger nature. You will be OK with the neutering operation, but don't let your vet start demanding anesthesiology for every procedure they come up with. Sometimes it IS necessary, but it should not be used indiscriminately. ExpatriateOutlaw what about pain medicine afterward I think they ask me about this but I dont remember ever givin any of my dogs pain meds after this operation and dont intead to start now linda **************Biggest Grammy Award surprises of all time on AOL Music.
