Well, I think that depends on your situation.  How often are you at home?
Are there other in the household, besides your son, who tends to the
critters?  Do you feel confident you can attend to the needs of a puppy?  A
dog, plus a cat, plus a puppy doesn't sound too bad to me, but I don't have
any kids.
