Hi, Yis!
I believe dogs need to work. My last big boy was a search and rescue dog.
when he passed years ago ,I needed to downsize so I could travel with my dogs.
I thoroughly researched many breeds and then started interviewing breeders.
That's when I got my bigger chi. I wanted him to work and since I'm a teacher,
I wanted to start a reading program with therapy dogs. I have a fabulous
principal who helped by thinking it through with me. (there were no reading
programs in my area. ) I started by attending puppy kindergarten, then
beginner obedience, then novice obedience. After that we went to therapy dog
school. Too bad you're not near me as there are two schools in our are.
Anyway, my little passed a week before his first birthday and now has his own
reading program at my school. No one knows yet, but you ladies are fabulous so
you will get the preview. Dogs for KIds, the kids offshoot of Dog Fancy will
be doing an article about my program in
their Feb/Mar issue. I am so excited. Thanks for letting me share that news!
Anyway, I would check with trainers in my area first to see if they offer a
special or separate class. The I would check with any therapy dog groups in
your area. They are very helpful and wonderful people. There are twenty
dog/handler teams in my program now! Yis, its such a special type of work. To
see your dog work their magic is an awesome experience. Let me know how you do!
Elizabeth
