Emiliano was 8 weeks old and lived mostly in his x pen, when I started training. I bought a litter box and a bag of the litter that was suggested to be used (green pellets). My baby thought they made wonderful toys, so he threw them up in the air and all over the room, then he decided to try to eat them. So, I threw away the litter and lined the box with newspaper onto which I had sopped a little of his urine. I put the box in his x pen and watched for the next time that he looked as if he was looking for a place to pottie. When he gave signs, I put him in the box, he sniffed the paper and peed,I did this twice. I watched him all afternoon and the very next time he appeared to be looking for a place, ON HIS OWN, he walked to the litter box, climbed in, sniffed around and used it and has ever since (he is now 22 months old). However, because I wanted him to learn to use the outside as well, the first thing in the morning, when he woke up, I took him outside and told him to pottie, it took a few tries but when he did, I praised him a lot. After learning to relieve himself outside, the first thing in the morning, it progressed to doing so whenever I put him out. So, when I am home to let him out, he goes outside but when I am going to be gone, he uses the litter box. I will say he likes me to change the paper after each big pee, I think it's because he doesn't like to step on the wet paper. Using the box is ideal, especially when the weather is bad.
