OK all,
I'm fairly new to the group and thought I'd get some of your thoughts/tips/advice on how to make the holidays a more pleasant time time for our little ones. I have two Chihuahuas as you may know. One is Twiggy. She's five years old and has been with me for about a month and a half. She's pretty laid back for a Chi and doesn't get too excited when someone comes into the house. In fact, family teases me by saying that they wouldn't even know I had a dog if she wasn't always on my lap or laying on her bed because she's so quiet. My other Chi, Jack, has been with me for about two weeks now. He's 3 years old and a little bit more high strung than Twiggy. I had a friend over this past weekend just to hang out and watch a movie. As soon as he walked into the house Jack started growling and snarling at him. I adopted Jack from a rescue that informed me that he was a former breeding dog who was taken from the breeder only to be placed in a hoarding type situation where he was with 65 other dogs so I can only imagine that his socialization training with Humans has been little to nothing at all. Only having Jack for two weeks he's still new to the house and getting used to everything. I know there is an adjustment time for him and that I should allow him the time that he needs to get used to his new environment. However, the Thanksgiving Holiday is coming up and I have at least 20 people coming to the house for dinner. I don't want to stress him out. I was also hoping that you could give me some advice on how to safely/appropriately socialize Jack without freaking him out. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
