Thanks so much Peggy! GREAT advice! I have no intentions of letting the shelter know my numbers here LOL! Shelters in CA do not do home visits and it is only about $50 to get one out. Both Redlands and Baldwin Park take care of all spay/nueter/shots etc before they allow the dog to leave and still charge only $50...and a discount if you take more than one! "Rescues" have home visits here and do charge $250-$550 to adopt out their rescues which is really silly to me!
I do have a dear friend that is a Vet...the first person I called when this "bug" hit!...she will do most of what I need done for any rescue I bring in for little to nothing...spay/nueter is $20...shots-$10...no office fee...etc. Here is where they can get you though and where friends and neighbors come in! When you adopt from a CA shelter part of their free gift to you in that $50 is their county dog license...so each dog now has an address and all your info is in the County records for Animal Control to monitor for license renewal...a big way they make $. The Officers in Redlands Shelter know me very well...one of them lives on my street. I would never have an issue with them knowing my numbers...they already do LOL and would happily allow me to "rescue" one of their dogs every now and then. Baldwin Park is a whole other story...they don't know me at all. Reggie at Redlands...my neighbor ..alluded to just giving out different addresses...especially out of County as BP would be for me. Morally I don't know how I feel about that...now I have to lie! So...the one at a time concept will buy me some time until I can get legit so to speak. I have done the foster route...there are many issues with it that don't make me too comfortable. First...asking $250-550 to me is crazy...many people just go buy pups from BYB instead. When they come to your home to meet the dog you are fostering they always think you can reduce or waive that adoption fee...as a Foster you have no power to do so...you are stuck with the "Rescue's" guidlines and policies. Also many "rescues" have guidlines that I think are just NUTS! The 3 main ones I have fostered for around me will not adopt out a dog to anyone that would allow a dog to be outside unattended...really??? That is insane! You and I both know many people that would never let their babies outside alone...but 99% of the world would...and it doesn't make them bad dog owners! Just because I am way over the top...not everyone else is! In their zealoussness to save a dog they make it almost impossible to place one! While I would want to be careful with whom I placed a dog...i would also like to use common sense. It is odd that I have a desire to join in the ranks of those that I don't approve of...most "rescues" just make me mad! I would want to do things different...way different. As far as Princess...she has until Monday...or so they said. I called when we were sitting in Denny's and let them know I was interested in her...so supposedly I have until Monday for her. And...this may sound hard but I know there are MANY there they didn't list on their website...if I get there and she isn't there...there will be many more to choose from. I do want to be picky though because I will not be his/her permanant home...I have to see who stands the best chance for me finding a home for him/her...who is the most adoptable in the most risk. Thanks Peggy...any advice or info you may have about becoming a legit rescue would be awesome...that goes for everyone!!! I know I have so much to learn!!!! I guess my first jumping off place is the County and getting a kennel license. Then I can have kennel numbers and be fine! Hello my special friends and encouragers!!! First I have to say I have NOT given up but I ran smack dab into a brick wall...almost literally. On our way down the mountain yesterday, our front tire blew out which caused us to swerve into the side of the mountain. Thank GOD we didn't swerve the other way as that was a 100 ft drop....the LORD definiately had His hand on us! Damage was done to the radiator, front bumper, as well as the tire and rim! We called the tow truck...thank goodness for AAA...and he pulled us into a repair place about 14 miles down the road. Across the street was a Denny's where my hubby and I sat for 5 hours while the shop did the repair work. We never got to the shelter!!! It did give us LOTS of time to talk. I was able to really get him to understand where my heart is on this rescue issue and I was able to hear him too! He knows me!!! He knows I will get way in over my head if he lets me run a-muck as he says LOL!!! So...I am still heading out to the shelter...tomorrow...as today is a holiday...but I will be only finding 1. He wants me to only rescue/place one at a time! For the time being anyway. When we move we will find land and a facility where I can actually become a rescue for small breeds...and he is all for that! He even thinks we should start now...here....where we live at present...just build a building...and get the proper permitts first...doing it right. What he is so worried about...is me wanting to keep everyone that comes here and then the County coming and taking away everyone just like they did with my friend Mary!...and he is so right! If I was really honest with myself...and with you all...I really had in my heart to keep whomever I brought home yesterday! So...I am gonna re-vamp my thinking...and just find that one that I might rescue...then once I get her/him placed...I will do another...one at a time until I can learn everything I need to do and do everything I need to do to actually become a small breed rescue. Of course we did have to crash the car that I had limited coverage on...of course!!! So...the whole bill is out of pocket...1300.00...there goes my Xmas fund!!!! Uggh!!! I am thankful however that I had started that Christmas fund last year...or I wouldn't have been able to fix the car LOL!!! I wonder how all my children will feel about getting homemade dog outfits for Christmas LOL!!!!! So...to all of you that were expecting a report of new little wigglers in The Dog Park????I am so sorry I let you all down!!! But...pray I find exactly the right one tomorrow...pray I am guided by HE who cares so deeply for all HIS own Creation...and pray I can learn all I have to do to really do this all the correct way ...that who I do actually rescue I can protect and keep safe from county authorities! The only way to do that is to jump through all their hoops and do it right! That is the most important thing! Deanna, I don't want to disappoint you any more then you already are... But if you intend to do rescue then you have to be brave and bear the dark side of it. Today is Thursday, those pups may not be around anymore, to put it delicately. When most kill shelters post their dogs on the web, it is usually because it is their last 3-5 days, this is definite for the Southern states. Their are many in your state that give them 5-7 days. Many of the CA shelters already have the dogs for 1-2 weeks in their shelter before they are posted. Every shelter has a PTSD. When a holiday comes around the dogs loose 1 more day, and they usually do the PTS the day before the holiday. Most shelters use Wed and or Firdays, 6-8AM as the PTSD , so the dogs have to be "pulled" the day before their schedule. So before you get in the car tomorrow, CALL the shelter and ask if each one is still available. You will have to have their ID# and name, and of course the breed available. It can be very aggregating when you try to call and it takes forever for them to pick up. Remember a lot of the shelters are short on help. Ask what their PTS days are. Ask how long is the average dog their BEFORE it is listed on the web. If they say that they were all adopted, it may or may not be true. They don't like to tell the public the truth, but they are honest with a registered rescue. If you are only allowed to own 3-4 dogs in your area, then they will never let you adopt another one, even if you have no intentions of keeping it. In fact if you tell them that you are adopting it, just to save it and intend to re-adopt it out, your name will go out to all the CA shelters on their list as 'not allowed to adopt" period. The only way to get around it is to have a neighbor, relative, friend adopt the dog and then give it to you. I don't know if the shelters in your state actually do a house check on adopters. Here on the east coast they do not. Also, before you adopt you want to make sure that you have the funds for a vet check and shots, HW test, etc. I think that it would be a good idea for you to volunteer with a local rescue as foster first before you jump into rescuing. They will be able to teach you a lot about all the different shelters in your area and about the laws where you live for harboring animals. It would also be good lesson for you to learn how to "let go" of your babies. If you find that you can handle Fostering, then you are ready to be a Rescue. A lot of Rescues foot the vetting bill for Fosters, so that in it self is a good start. Just my opinion, since you are aware of your weakness of being afraid of not letting go. I agree with your hubby that just to help one at a time. It is a favorite quote of most rescues for good reasons. Sometimes it is not easy to think with your heart instead of your head, it's a good thing for you that your hubby is strong in this area, Lol! Please try not to feel to sad about this first group of Chi's, their are still so many more out their that you will be able to help, when the time is right. Sweetie, their was no reason for you to apoligize, you did not let me down and I am confident that others feel the same way. Hugs, ♥ Peggy & The Girls ♥
