Giardia can not be transferred from an animal to a human unless you are unsanitary...you have to in some way ingest infected feces...but a human can contract Giardia by consuming infected stagnent water, food or dirt. Just because you get giardia on your skin will not infect you...you have to swallow or ingest it. Giardia can be in a wet piece of grass...it can be in a puddle outside. It takes something like 2 parts per million to cause illness. Even GOOD breeders can struggle with giardia...because it can transfer from pup to pup through urination and feces. It can come into your keenel in as easy of a step as a visit from one prospective puppy buyer coming from a previous kennel into yours and tracking it on their shoes into your house...a dog smells, and licks that area and whamo...giardia outbreak. It can be hard to treat if the pup is not healthy to begin with or is a tiny toy breed. In the beginning many of it's symptoms mirror Parvo...diarhea, vommiting etc. Many pups make it through just fine so it isn't half as bad as Parvo. It is the dehydration that can be deadly.
If you have a new puppy in your house be really careful with visitors that have been looking at pups or have dogs that visit dog parks or dog beaches. Back when I was breeding adorable little poodles I started using a plastic tub...about 3" deep where I keep a soaked towel of disinfectant by my front door...visitors have to walk through the tub to walk into my house thus killing anything on their shoes. I also keep a spray bottle of the same disinfectant so I can spray hands before they come in. I kind of kept up this practice as i do a lot with dogs...when I visit shelters or friends with many dogs I walk through the tub and spray my hands before I come back into my house. It is such an easy thing to do and i really do think it helps prevent many things. The name of the disinfectant I use is Trifectant and I buy it through JeffersPets. I know ringworm is transmissible to humans. If what they had was so contagious how come not all of them had on plastic gloves?
