It is estimated the colony now numbers more than 500. There are various
stories of how they got here, pet shipment overturned in a transport
accident, someone let several pets loose, and even that several were let loose
to
see if they could survive. At any rate they are beautiful and as pets they
have a reputation for being good talkers. The one negative is that they
like to build on light poles with transformers and so the utility company is
not happy with them and often it is rumored that they conduct "eradication"
programs. I once wrote the head of the utility department (under the city
here) asking about it and he denied such a program existed. Although, I
myself once witnessed utility workers tearing down 2 nests that had babies
in them. When I inquired they told me the babies would to taken to Humane
Society (under the city here) but when I followed up and called, I was told
they did not handle birds. So, I could guess what happened to the babies.
